Orient Chef Pulses — The Story Behind Kenya's Premium Pulse Brand
May 05, 2026 · By Rajiv Pandya
There is a quiet revolution happening in Kenyan kitchens. Lentils that used to be pale, dusty things in unmarked packets are being replaced by vibrant, clean, graded pulses that actually taste like something. Chickpeas that cook evenly. Mixed beans that hold their shape in githeri. Green lentils that make a proper, thick, satisfying dal.
That revolution has a name: Orient Chef.
Why We Launched a Pulses Brand
Orient Enterprises spent its first years building a reputation for premium macadamia — sourcing, processing, and exporting Kenya's finest macadamia nuts to buyers in Europe, Asia, and North America. But we kept hearing the same thing from the Kenyan families who knew our macadamia: "When are you going to make food for us?"
Kenya is a nation of pulse eaters. Githeri, dal, pilau, bean stews, chickpea salads — pulses are fundamental to Kenyan and East African cooking across all communities and income levels. And yet the retail pulse market in Kenya has largely been commodity-level: unbranded, variable quality, lacking in nutritional information, and often disappointingly inconsistent.
We believed we could do better. In 2023, Orient Chef was born.
What Makes Orient Chef Different
The same standards we apply to our macadamia export business, we apply to Orient Chef. Every pulse in our range is sourced from quality-focused growers, cleaned and graded in our FSSC 22000-certified facility, tested for moisture and purity, and packed in clear, resealable packaging that shows you exactly what you're buying.
What you see is what you get. Clean, uniform, premium-grade pulses — with no broken pieces, no grit, no foreign matter. Pulses that cook consistently and taste the way they're supposed to.
Our range covers the essentials of East African cooking. Red Lentils and Green Lentils for dals and soups. Chickpeas for salads and curries. Red Kidney Beans for chilli and stews. Mixed Beans and Black-Eyed Beans for githeri and traditional dishes. Green Peas for pilau and accompaniments. Brown Lentils for hearty, rustic soups. Every product in a format that is genuinely useful in the kitchen.
Nutrition You Can Afford
We are acutely aware that nutrition in Kenya is not an abstract concept — it is something families navigate daily, within real budget constraints. Pulses are one of the most cost-effective sources of plant protein and dietary fibre available. A 250g pack of Orient Chef Red Lentils at KES 120 provides four generous servings of a high-protein, high-fibre meal. That is nutrition you can count on.
Our packaging includes clear nutritional information, cooking instructions, and recipe suggestions — because knowing what you're eating matters, and because a pulse you don't know how to cook isn't a pulse you'll buy again.
Recipes, Not Just Ingredients
Orient Chef is not just a product range. It is an invitation to cook well. Our recipe content — available in our online recipe collection — was built around Orient Chef pulses from the ground up: Classic Kenyan Githeri, Creamy Red Lentil Dal, Mediterranean Chickpea Salad, Spiced Green Pea Pilau, Kidney Bean Chilli, and Green Lentil Soup. Six vegetarian recipes, each one tested, each one genuinely delicious, each one built to show what Orient Chef pulses can do in the right hands.
We believe food companies have a responsibility not just to sell ingredients, but to help people cook. Every recipe we publish is a bridge between a product on a shelf and a satisfying meal on a table.
The Story Behind Every Pack
When you pick up a pack of Orient Chef Mixed Beans, it has been through the same hands, the same facility, and the same standards as our premium export macadamia. It has been sorted, graded, and packed by the same extraordinary team of women who process Kenya's finest nuts for the world's most demanding buyers.
That standard is what Orient means. Grown with love. Packed with nutrition. Delivered to your table.
