Inside Orient's FSSC 22000 Certified Macadamia Facility in Juja, Kenya

Every bag of Orient macadamia that reaches your hands has travelled through approximately 22 controlled steps before it arrives. Those steps happen inside our 18,000 sq ft processing and packaging facility on the Jujaโ€“Gatundu Road in Kiambu County โ€” a facility that has achieved FSSC 22000 Version 5.1 certification, one of the most rigorous international food safety standards in existence.

This is a story about what that means. And why it matters that a Kenyan company is doing it.

What Is FSSC 22000?

FSSC 22000 is a food safety management system standard built on the foundation of ISO 22000. To achieve certification, a processing facility must demonstrate that it has identified every potential food safety hazard in its operation โ€” biological, chemical, and physical โ€” and implemented effective controls to prevent, eliminate, or reduce each one to an acceptable level.

It requires documented processes, trained staff, calibrated equipment, regular internal audits, and periodic third-party certification audits. The standard is recognised globally by food retailers and importers in Europe, North America, Asia, and beyond.

Orient achieved FSSC 22000 certification in 2020. We have maintained it continuously since.

The Journey from Farm Gate to Pouch

Macadamia nuts arrive at our facility as nuts-in-shell (NIS) from our farmer partners. The journey from that point to a finished, packed product involves multiple critical stages, each controlled and documented.

Intake and grading: Every incoming lot is weighed, documented, and assigned a batch number. Samples are drawn for moisture testing and quality inspection. Lots that do not meet our intake specifications are rejected at this point.

Cracking: Our automated cracking line processes nuts at a controlled force calibrated to the nut size โ€” too little and the shell doesn't open cleanly, too much and kernels are damaged. The cracking ratio and kernel recovery are recorded for every batch.

Sorting and grading: This is where our extraordinary team earns its reputation. Kernels move across sorting tables where our trained staff inspect each one visually and remove any sub-standard pieces โ€” discoloured, mouldy, or broken kernels that could compromise the finished product. We then grade by style: the international size classifications (Style 0, 1, 1S, 4L, 4, 5) that determine what your kernel looks like and how it will perform in its end use.

Metal detection and final inspection: Every product batch passes through our inline metal detector before packaging. This is a non-negotiable step: no batch proceeds to packing without a clean metal detection pass, and the detector is calibrated and tested at the start and end of every production run.

Packaging: Our retail products are packaged in nitrogen-flushed, vacuum-sealed aluminium pouches. Nitrogen flushing displaces oxygen inside the pouch before sealing โ€” this is what extends shelf life and preserves the fresh, buttery flavour of our macadamia without the need for preservatives. Every batch is coded with a best-before date and full traceability information.

Additional Certifications

Beyond FSSC 22000, Orient holds several additional certifications that confirm our commitment to quality and open doors to specific markets. We are registered with the US FDA (Registration No. 15993039961), allowing us to export to the United States. We are GACC-registered for export to China. We are Kosher Certified by the Nairobi Hebrew Congregation, and approved by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).

These are not boxes we ticked once. They require ongoing compliance, regular audits, and continuous investment in our systems and people.

A Kenyan Standard of Excellence

There is something we are genuinely proud of in all of this. Kenya grows world-class macadamia. What has sometimes held Kenyan exporters back from the highest-value markets is not the quality of the nut โ€” it is the difficulty of meeting the documentation, traceability, and food safety requirements that premium buyers demand.

Orient built a facility from the ground up that meets those requirements. Not to satisfy a checklist, but because our farmers deserve to access premium prices, our customers deserve to eat a safe, premium product, and Kenya deserves to be known as a source of exceptional macadamia โ€” not just a raw material supplier.
