Meet the Women Behind Your Macadamia
May 05, 2026 ยท By Rajiv Pandya
Walk into the Orient Enterprises processing facility on JujaโGatundu Road any morning of the week, and you'll be struck immediately by the same thing every visitor is: the energy. The hum of the sorting lines, the quiet focus, the occasional laugh. And the faces โ overwhelmingly, unmistakably, proudly women.
More than 80% of our 120+ person team are women. That is not an accident. It is a deliberate, deeply held commitment that has been part of Orient's identity since we opened our doors in 2018.
Why Women โ and Why It Matters
Kenya's food processing sector has historically been male-dominated at the supervisory and technical levels, while women filled lower-paid, less stable roles. We set out to change that from day one. At Orient, women hold positions across every layer of the operation โ from line sorting and quality inspection through to team leadership and factory management.
The results speak for themselves. Our female workforce brings extraordinary precision, care, and consistency to every batch. Macadamia grading is painstaking work: each kernel must be visually assessed, sized, and sorted to meet international buyer specifications. Our teams do this with a standard of accuracy that has earned Orient its FSSC 22000 food safety certification โ one of the highest international quality benchmarks in the industry.
What a Shift Looks Like
Behind our factory-sorting floor, there are real stories. Women who were previously informal traders or subsistence farmers now hold skilled, year-round employment. Women who support households of four, five, six. Women who have funded school fees, built homes, and saved for the first time in their lives โ because they have a stable salary and a workplace that respects them.
Employment is only part of it. Orient provides on-the-job training in food safety, hygiene standards, and equipment operation. These are skills that carry value beyond our factory walls โ skills that women keep for life and can pass on to others in their communities.
A Factory Built Around People
Our 10,000 sq ft facility in Juja, Kiambu County, was designed with the people inside it in mind. Covered workstations with proper ventilation. Clean welfare areas. Accessible facilities. A working environment that meets international standards โ because the women who work here deserve nothing less.
When you buy Orient macadamia nuts โ whether our dry-roasted 250g packs, our honey-glazed retail pouches, or our bulk wholesale grades โ you are directly supporting the livelihoods of these women. Every purchase funds a salary, a school term, a family's next meal.
This International Women's Day and every day, we celebrate the heart of Orient: the extraordinary team who make it all possible.
